My husband & I recently started the Ketogenic (or Keto) Diet to try & get back in shape & lose some of those extra pounds we’ve accumulated over the holidays…and all the rest of the days…
For those that don’t know, the Keto Diet is a diet that forces the body into a process called ketosis, whereby fats are burned instead of carbohydrates for use as energy. A proper ketogenic diet calls for the dieter to consume high amounts of fat, adequate amounts of protein, and very low amounts of carbohydrates.
Basically, you can only eat air. But we’ve decided to go ahead & give it a try. We went to the store & got all the keto friendly foods (all 5 of them. Just kidding. Kind of), made a plan of how we were going to do this, when we would have our weighs in, who would kill (or eat) the other one first. That kind of stuff.
I figured if I blog about our experience, maybe it’ll force me to stay on track. Maybe. Hopefully. Did someone just say pizza?…
So here is how our first few days went.
Day 1:
The morning went pretty good. I made these little egg muffin thingys (thank God for Pinterest). Some had spinach, some had ham & cheese, bacon, even ones with jalapenos. They were actually pretty good & somehow filling. We did ok with lunch too, but at this point my brain is running out of fuel so I don’t even remember what either one of us ate. We nailed dinner with low carb sundried tomato & basil chicken sausages & green beans. We both were pretty happy with how the day had gone. THEN it was that time. You know, the time after the kids have gone to bed & you’re ready to sit down in front of the tv to watch trashy tv, where you are usually saddled up with half a convenience store of snacks? Ya, shit got real at that point.
We literally contemplated sniffing the Oreos. You could see the panic starting to rise up in my husband while he was trying to figure out what he could snack on. Who the hell wants to snack on fruit (and limited fruit at that) & pieces of cheese all night? That was when we realized this was going to be harder than we thought. However, me made it! I ate a couple strawberries & continued chugging my water. He settled for some cheese & like one carrot.
FYI, even those freeze pops that kids love are loaded with carbs. Jerks.
Day 2:
Yay! We survived the first day! Day 2 started off good. We had more of those egg muffin thingamabobs & coffee of course. I made Italian sandwich roll ups for lunch & brought them to work with me with a little bit (and by a little, I mean 2 tablespoons) of Chickpea salad. I was feeling pretty good, alive, not starving. Then my office manager decided to buy donuts, bagels & muffins for all of us. FML, man. It was SO friggin’ hard to resist, especially since she got a shit ton of chocolate frosted with sprinkles (my fave). However, I resisted!! I don’t know how, but I did! Ok, ok. I might have smelled the donuts a few 100 times, but hey, that’s ok!
I had the munchies a lot that afternoon, but thankfully chasing patients around all day helped keep me busy. During any down time, I munched on a few almonds. Oh, & I’m peeing every 3 minutes from all the water I’m drinking. It’s like being pregnant all over again.
The night routine was the same as day 1. We are still adjusting to our new reality of staying away from the chips, so instead of wallowing all night, we went to bed early. Problem solved.
Day 3:
We’re still hanging in. Today I noticed a little bit of sluggishness but nothing too crazy. I’m already down 1.5 lbs in just 2 days so I’ll take it! I’m just praying the “carb flu” doesn’t hit me. Google it, it’s a real thing. When you stop eating carbs or severely cut back, your body starts to feel flu-ish. Yaaaay…
The girls at work ordered P.F. Chang’s for lunch…I hate them. 🙂 Again, I was able to refrain from ordering with them. I should get bonus (carb) points for this!
Dave is struggling. Around noon I got a text from him stating a disgusting, gross thing he was willing to do at this point just to eat a loaf of bread. He better not bail on me because I can’t do this alone.
I’m still struggling to get in my calories. Eating only 20 grams of carbs has been leaving me with like 600 calories still left for the day. Trying to balance it all out is tough.
I’m not constantly hungry which is good. I think all the water is helping with that. The cravings for sweets is still going strong though.
Day 4:
Today was the hardest for some reason. I could not kick the cravings for sweets…and chips! I’m beginning to feel like Tom Hanks in Castaway.
I’m definitely a little more tired but I don’t know if that’s the lack or carbs or just life in general. And holy hell, I am hangry. Nonstop. 24/7. Hangry.Â
I don’t even have the patience to think of what to write anymore!
I’ll keep y’all updated with another post when we hit the 1 week mark.
P.S. I’m offering $500 to anyone that slips me a piece of cake.Â
